Date: January 2015
Location: Sakhalin, Russia
Client: Kimchi Stop
Category: National Cuisine
Client Overview
Kimchi Stop fast-food café opened in the small city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia, where Korean cuisine was almost unknown to local residents.
In the printed menu of this Korean fast-food café, the dish names are written in Korean and English, so customers often ordered “blindly,” not knowing what each dish looked like or what ingredients it contained.
Many guests asked the waiters about the composition and portion size. Because of this, potential visitors often passed by and went to competitors with a more familiar menu and cuisine.
Challenges & Goals
To avoid financial loss and possible closure, the management of the Kimchi Stop fast-food café decided to change its marketing strategy.
The main goal was set clearly — to visually explain unfamiliar Korean dishes, make the menu easy to understand, and attract passers-by through appealing presentation.
As part of this new approach, the fast-food café decided to build a showcase with realistic Korean food replicas representing the fast-food café’s menu.
The visual display was expected to introduce Korean cuisine to potential customers and help increase both dine-in visitors and take-away sales.
Our Solution
The Nippon Dom workshop helped design the fast-food café’s food display, select the most attractive dishes, and create realistic Korean food replicas that precisely reproduced their authentic appearance.
The team also provided marketing recommendations for the overall layout and presentation.
Together with the management of the Kimchi Stop fast-food café, a clear and visually balanced display plan was developed, showing the dishes in an appealing order.
It was decided to place numbered labels in front of each dish — next to the name and price — so that customers could easily place an order without remembering unfamiliar Korean names, simply by using the numbers.
Results & Impact
All the planned objectives were successfully achieved.
After installing the realistic Korean food replicas, the fast-food café immediately noticed positive changes.
Customer interest grew significantly, the number of dine-in guests increased, and take-away sales rose as well.
The new showcase not only simplified the ordering process and improved service speed but also helped build trust with the local community, making Korean cuisine more familiar and appealing.
Thanks to these improvements, the Kimchi Stop fast-food café received the award for Best Fast-Food Venue in Russia 2023, confirming the success of its new visual strategy.
